From Humble Beginnings to Outdoor Fashion Icon

Founded in 1938, the Columbia Sportswear brand we know today was originally called Columbia Hat Company, started by the Lamfrom family, immigrants from Germany who settled in Portland, Oregon. Naming their new hat distributorship after the Columbia River, it began to evolve in popularity, and the Lamfrom’s daughter, Gertrude, began to have a larger role in its operations. Known as Gert, she known for telling her team, “It’s perfect, now make it better.”

In the 1960s, Gert saw an opportunity to expand from hats to other outdoor gear. After hearing that fishermen wanted vests with ample pockets for their supplies, she used her sewing machine to create a prototype. Columbia’s now-iconic Henry’s Fork Vest became an immediate best-seller, which put the company on the map even more, and she created it in just one day’s work.

Through preservation and continuing innovation, Gert led Columbia into a new era, becoming known as “One Tough Mother” after a 1980s advertising campaign, which made her popular around the world. With this momentum, Columbia began to separate itself from other outdoor clothing brands in the 1990s, coming out with the original Bugaboo Interchange Jacket and launching its Performance Fishing Gear line.

In the early 2000s, Columbia introduced new technologies, such as Omni-Shade sun protection and Omni-Grip traction, becoming a tried-and-true leader in outdoor gear innovations. Columbia continued to make waves into the 2010s, releasing the Omni-Heat line inspired by space blankets to keep individuals warm and dry — without weighing them down during their adventures. Later, Columbia released its OutDry Extreme waterproofing technology, the first such solution to ever hit the industry. Putting an impermeable membrane on the outside — not the inside — enhances comfort and has revolutionized how individuals stay dry and warm in harsh conditions.
